According to the City of Oviedo website (cityofoviedo.net), Oviedo is currently experiencing a growth spurt, planning to expand its downtown by approximately 50 acres. “This new mixed use development will feature a residential component of single-family houses, town homes and apartments, a commercial business district and retail establishments. Oviedo on the Park has an expected completion date between 2012 and 2015. Other developments are under construction around the City offering residents new places to dine and partake of consumer services.”

Oviedo is very near Orlando, which is well known for local tourist attractions such as Walt Disney World Resort, SeaWorld, and Universal Studios. Also within short driving distances are the Kennedy Space Center and nearby Daytona Beach and Cocoa Beach. The area sees an estimated 52 million tourists a year.

Oviedo is home to the Oviedo Marketplace mall. The mall contains three major department stores (Macy’s, Dillard's and Sears), a Bed Bath & Beyond store, bookstores, movie cinemas and a food court.

More than thirty of them can be seen in the area of the historic downtown shopping center, often stopping traffic as they cross the roads.
